Sandy Layton's sculptural practice unites her background as a psychotherapist with a rich interest in sculptural form, materiality and objects. With a keen focus on attachments and associations, Layton interrogates the juxtapositions of hand-crafted and readymade objects, and the relationships between sculptural forms - alluding to the work of 20th century sculptural modernists such as Barbara Hepworth. Through the assemblage of expertly crafted ceramic forms with specifically selected synthetic materials Layton draws these ideas under the banner of the contemporary, whilst adding additional layers of meaning through the consideration of space and site – producing works that not only listen and relate to each other, but also are attentive to the spaces that they inhabit.
